Bugisu & Rwenzori: A Guide to Uganda's Arabica Regions
Although Robusta accounts for the majority of Uganda’s coffee production, the country’s highland regions also produce high-quality Arabica that is increasingly sought after by specialty roasters.
Bugisu (Mt. Elgon)
On the slopes of Mt. Elgon in eastern Uganda, Arabica is cultivated at altitudes of approximately 1,600 to 2,300 metres in fertile volcanic soil. Most Bugisu coffee is fully washed, producing a clean cup characterised by:
- bright, citrus-like acidity
- floral and wine-like notes
- a sweet, chocolate finish
Bugisu Arabica is graded as AA, A, AB and PB, and the higher grades are well regarded by specialty buyers.
Rwenzori (Mountains of the Moon)
In western Uganda, the Rwenzori region produces naturally processed Arabica known as Drugar (Dried Uganda Arabica), alongside an increasing volume of washed coffee. These coffees typically offer red-fruit sweetness, caramel notes and a fuller body.
Specialty and Organic Coffee
We work with producer groups that harvest only ripe cherries and apply careful processing. Lots from certified organic producers are available on request, offering buyers traceable coffee with a clear origin.
Buyers may contact us for current Arabica offers and pre-shipment samples.
