Understanding Uganda Robusta Screen Grades: 18, 15, 12 and BHP
Uganda is Africa’s leading exporter of Robusta coffee, and international buyers typically specify Robusta by screen size. A screen is a perforated sieve; the screen number indicates the size of its holes in 64ths of an inch. A Screen 18 bean, for example, is retained by a sieve with holes 18/64 of an inch in diameter.
Screen 18
Screen 18 comprises the largest and most uniform beans. Its consistent size allows an even roast, and it produces a full-bodied, smooth cup with chocolate and nutty notes. It is widely used by roasters producing premium espresso blends.
Screen 15
Screen 15 consists of medium-sized, well-sorted beans that offer a balance of strength and smoothness. It provides good cup quality at a competitive price and is suitable for a wide range of roast and ground products.
Screen 12
Screen 12 consists of smaller beans with a bold, earthy flavour. It is a cost-effective option for blends and soluble coffee, where bean size is less critical.
BHP (Black beans, Husks and Pods)
BHP is the fraction that remains after sorting. It is not intended for whole-bean roasting; it is purchased by soluble coffee and extraction plants for its caffeine content and soluble solids.
Selecting a Grade
| Application | Recommended grade |
|---|---|
| Premium espresso blends | Screen 18 |
| Roast and ground coffee | Screen 15 |
